Diets for Pancreatitis
- Since alcohol is the most common cause for pancreatitis, avoiding alcohol should be the cornerstone of any diet plan to relieve pancreatitis. If you can't do this, even in the face of pain and vomiting, you may have a drinking problem and should consult your doctor or a support group.
- The best diet to avoid pancreatitis is a low-fat one, although some experts recommend a low-carbohydrate diet. You can find a number of popular diets that are built on the low-carb concept. Whole foods are preferred over processed foods, so prepare whole foods at home as much as is possible.
- Eat yogurt for breakfast or as a snack. The bacteria in yogurt help keep your digestive system healthy and maintain a healthy immune system. Check the yogurt label to make sure the brand you are buying has live yogurt cultures.
- Use spinach in your recipes as a rich source of vitamin B and iron. Try blueberries and cherries as a delicious source of antioxidants. Tofu can be used as a substitute for red meat. Fish, lentils, kidney beans, soy milk, oatmeal, bread, tofu and macaroni can all be used in a diet to fight pancreatitis.
- Besides alcohol, there are other things you should avoid consuming. These include caffeine, spicy food, high-fat foods, excessive processed foods, excessive carbohydrates and sugar.
