How to Remove Calcium Carbonate From a Glass Tank

    • 1). Dampen a lint-free cloth with white vinegar, and wipe the water spots on the outside surface of the glass tank. Don’t use paper towels to clean your aquarium. They shed tiny bits of lint and may even etch minute scratches into the glass.

    • 2). Remove the aquarium lid, and cover the tank with a wire screen if you have jumpers living in it. Allow the water to evaporate for about a week without replenishing. This will expose the heaviest layers of calcium carbonate that have been building up on the inside of the glass at the water line.

    • 3). Heat a cup of white vinegar so it’s very warm but not too hot to handle comfortably. Warm vinegar works faster than cold vinegar.

    • 4). Dip a lint-free cloth into the vinegar, and wring it out. Wipe the calcium carbonate deposits from the waterline at the inside of the glass tank. You can safely dip below the surface to clean a little lower if you wish. The white vinegar will cut the lime quickly and effectively without harming your fish. Replace the tank lid.
