Al Qaeda Is Definitely Hurting But We Need To Be Careful
The US has spent billions of dollars and many lost lives in the process of attempting to eject al Qaeda from some of the places where they have found safe haven. I believe that of it were not for assistance that they have gotten from the Pakistanis our troops would not have had such a hard time attempting to eject them from Afghanistan.
I believe that the fact that so many high ranking al Qaeda leaders have been killed by drones in Pakistan is proof enough of the complicity of the Pakistanis in this situation. They had to have been getting some type of help. I also believe that there is no way that the Pakistanis did not know that they were harboring terrorists.
The situation with Iran serves to complicate the matter even more and could end up being another factor which strengthens the terror organization. Al Qaeda needs outside assistance in order to work their terrorist deeds and Iran has been another safe haven for them. The situation between Iran and the United States right now is volatile to say the least. Iran wont overlook any opportunity to do damage to the US and Israel and al Qaeda is just what the doctor ordered in the sense that they will gladly accept clandestine assistance which I am also sure has been happening.
Al-Qaida and Iran are part of a mosaic of interconnected enemies the U.S. faces, including terrorists, criminals and foreign powers, who may try to strike via nuclear weapons or cyberspace.
Al-Qaida still aspires to strike the U.S., but it will likely have to go for smaller, simpler attacks because its ranks have been severely thinned by continued pressure from U.S. drone strikes and special operations raids since Osama bin Laden's death at the hands of Navy SEALs in Pakistan last year.
US intelligence chiefs predicted al-Qaida's regional affiliates will try to pick up the slack for the beleaguered core group in Pakistan from the Yemeni offshoot, al-Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula, and Somalia's al-Shabaab. If they can't reach the U.S. homeland, they'll try to attack western targets in their geographic areas, they said, and the Yemeni branch of al-Qaida remains the most likely affiliate to try to attack the U.S. homeland.
The U.S. continues to put pressure on the Yemeni offshoot, and on Monday mounted airstrikes targeting al-Qaida leaders there, killing at least four suspected militants, according to Yemeni and military officials.
Just below al-Qaida on the list of threats comes the possibility of proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, from chemical and biological, to nuclear and radiological. The intelligence community does not believe states that possess them have supplied them to terror groups, but that remains a risk. The Obama administration has begun an initiative to account for all of the nuclear material and components in the world that could possibly be used to create a weapon. This is an ambitious undertaking to say the least but we must do everything in our power to prevent the wrong people from getting their hands on this material. This is a scary situation and reminds me of the baby climbing up in the chair to see the pot cooking on the stove. You know that sooner or later he will get burned, its just a matter of time.
