Hotel Hygiene In Battle Against Super Bed Bugs

London has become centre of the world's attention during the Olympic Games, while the massive influx of supporters have been a welcome addition to the capital, experts have warned about a much larger and unacceptable visitor influx from an outbreak of ‘super' bed bugs.

London hotels have seen a huge rise in the number of bugs according to the research conducted by the institute of Biology.  The bloodsucking bugs can grow to about 4mm long in adulthood and are proving resistant to the pesticides that we commonly use.

Hotels are leaving themselves open to legal action from their visitors if they fail to deal with the problem.  Alison Bailey, editor of The Biologist magazine warns: "I think hoteliers are very concerned, because there is the potential for legal action here if someone is bitten." The growth of online reviews is another area of concern for hoteliers; as you don't have to look too far to find the mention of bed bugs in the reviews of some hotels.

London has seen a massive growth in bed bugs over the past few years with estimates of a tenfold increase.  Bugs will embed themselves in clothing and luggage and then get transported from hotel to hotel with great ease. A thriving colony can develop from one single pregnant female in as little as a month. Bed bugs breed very quickly, especially in warm rooms, so it is essential to maintain hygiene levels, particularly in the case of fabrics. The problem has been exacerbated in recent years by the growth of travel due to lower costs, ease of transport and increasing aspirations for travel worldwide. Whilst UK cities have a problem, it is also a concern in many major US cities and other countries worldwide.

The abundance of food available in bed mattresses (that means ‘our dead skin that we shed naturally') that it becomes an ideal environment for the bed bugs to develop and thrive.  Many companies are ignoring the issue and potentially leaving themselves liable to significant costs from legal action or retrospective actions to eradicate the problem using pest control experts.  The impact of negative publicity on their business could ultimately be the most costly impact of their neglect and may lead to extreme damage to a company's reputation.

Maintaining good hygiene regimes are essential for any company that takes the issue seriously and wants to protect their business from the costly consequences of this growing worldwide bed bug menace. Conventional methods are not proving effective against the problem and many businesses are turning to UVC-Light Products as a means to control the problem.  Far from being a cost, a high level of cleanliness can become a positive factor which becomes a competitive point of differentiation for the business in brochures, advertising and online reviews.
