How And Why To Structure Your Blog Posts

It's easy for your blog to become disorganised and end up as nothing more than a loose collection of ideas.
When I speak with clients about how to develop their blogs one regular problem that arises is how to maintain an ordered structure.
In the drafting phase of article or content creation many writers simply spill out whatever comes into their head.
This is okay for a draft but not an efficient method of creating quality blog content.
Structure and Framework With a defined structure in place, your blog articles wont fade away in the middle or have sections that spill out the side.
Like a perfect shaped pancake, you want your blog post to maintain a form or framework that is recognisable and digestible.
It's easier to create and far easier for your readers to take in.
How to Structure Your Content Like any quality article your content needs three key elements:
  1. An introduction that grabs the reader and highlights the subject.
  2. The main-body - this will explore the topic and provide detail that is best delivered with bullet points or subsections with highlighted headings.
  3. A conclusion that neatly rounds off the article and provides a call to action.
Edit & Revise The first step in the edit process is to check that your introduction has successfully hooked your reader.
If you have written your post in list form, ensure that you haven't just jumped straight into the subject matter.
Provide the reader with some context so they have good reason to continue reading.
Check also that your conclusion completes the article.
It doesn't need to repeat the substance of the article but it does need to round off the post and give it an ending that feels complete.
You may end by encouraging the reader to try out one of the ideas you have presented or ask them to leave a comment on the article or their experiences.
The main-body of the post is the most important and needs careful structuring.
A couple of simple ways to achieve this might be to:
  1. Split the post into sections with subheadings.
Try to maintain similar lengths for each.
  2. Create a list post with numbers or bullets.
  3. Create a "How To" by using a list post to create steps.
  4. Build up a particular point by using paragraphs as a lead in tool.
When planning your post, consider the subheadings you might chose to include and try writing them in alternate orders to see which makes the most sense structurally for you and your readers.
If you're having any trouble with your structure why not try visiting some of your most favourite blogs to see how they put their articles together.
Look at how they introduce a topic and conclude it after making sure you are fully informed.
You might find a framework that works well for you.
