Our nation is on the verge of a healthcare crisis.
With the median age for nursing professionals being 45 years and not nearly enough replacements coming up through the ranks, medical staffing needs are not being met.
We have already been seeing the results of this shortage in the number of patients who are suing hospitals for not providing them with sufficient care.
There simply aren't enough nurses to meet the needs.
Yet, in the midst of this serious crisis, healthcare staffing companies are coming into their own.
Even as investors jumped ship expecting the industry to crash and burn, stocks began an upward turn.
What exactly do healthcare staffing companies do? They specialize in providing employees who have the necessary qualifications to the hospitals and private care jobs that are in need of filling.
They advertise that they will fill these vacancies on contract, as temp-to-perm employees, by the day, or as direct hire personnel.
Although it seems miraculous that they are able to recruit qualified people even during this time of slumping applicants, they employ recruiting methods that reap results.
In addition, they have the time it takes to thoroughly search for those professionals that hospitals executives and those of other institutions cannot get the opportunity to do.
One field that has suffered a great deal from the lack of professional personnel is the area of travel nurses.
These dedicated workers go where the need is instead of working continuously at the same facility.
For example, a traveling nurse may be assigned to a summer camp caring for everything from cuts and scrapes to seizures.
Such assignments often include roughing it, sleeping in tents, battling local insects, and braving the rigors of living in the woods.
Nurses who sign up with a traveling nurse company may go on short-term assignments all over the country.
They also fill in for a period of time at hospitals which are facing staff shortages.
It's easy to see, though, why qualified nurses are in short supply for these demanding jobs.
Healthcare staffing companies are bridging the gap between the needs of healthcare facilities and the availability of professional staff.
Unless a lot of people decide to go into the nursing field in the next few years, even this assistance may not be enough.
One study which was conducted indicated that a third of the nurse's polled were planning to leave the field within a year due to low pay, poor working conditions, and back-breaking work.
