In the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king, and in the landscape of 2015 horror movies, a $20 million opening is downright Avengers-like. The box office track record for horror so far in 2015 has been so bleak that Poltergeist's estimated $23 million opening this past weekend is already the third largest TOTAL gross for a horror film this year. It needs less than $10 million more to pass Unfriendedfor the highest earning fright flick of 2015.
Granted, the tide should change quickly, with highly anticipated sequels Insidious Chapter 3, Sinister 2 and Jurassic World on the way this summer, but for now, Poltergeist is the belle of this year's underwhelming ball.
