What is a semiconductor?

106 30
A semiconductor is a substance which has an electrical conductivity that falls between the high conductivity of a conductor and the low conductivity of an insulator.

The most useful semiconductors have conductive properties that change under different conditions, such as when the substance is exposed to an electric field or temperature changes. Specially designed configurations of semiconducting materials allow for the creation of transistors and other useful electronic components that form the basis of modern electronics.
