Pregnancy is a time when 50% - 80% of women suffer from lower back pain and it often starts as early as the 12th week.
One of the most noticeable aspects is the change in the posture as adaptations to the stance to accommodate the growing baby are made.
Another significant change which occurs during pregnancy is the softening of the ligaments.
Whilst this process is perfect for giving birth, it does mean that the joints can come under additional stress.
All these changes in the body can result in the all too familiar symptoms of morning sickness, indigestion, heartburn, backache and sciatica, and carpal tunnel syndrome.
Some of these symptoms can be helped with chiropractic treatments as realigning the pelvic and spinal bones can help to take some of the strain off the joints.
But How Can Chiropractic Help During Pregnancy? Women are now more than ever looking for drug free approaches to tacking the aches and pains of pregnancy.
A chiropractor will check and maintain the pelvis and spine to help to prepare a woman for the delivery of her baby and help to relieve back ache, sciatica leg, hip and groin pain experienced during pregnancy.
Is Chiropractic Safe? All chiropractors are trained and skilled practitioners and study for 4 - 5 years, the profession is highly regulated by the General Chiropractic Council and your chiropractor will only treat you after a thorough consultation.
They only do what is necessary.
Manipulations are often not carried out until the end of the 1st trimester.
What Signs Would A Pregnant Woman Spot That Suggest This Treatment Might Work For Her? If the baby is uncomfortable it will often be restless causing the woman pain and discomfort.
Back pain and difficulty in walking are all signs that the woman's structure is struggling to cope with the adaptive changes progressive through the pregnancy.
Is Chiropractic Available On The NHS? Some GP's now offer chiropractic but most don't so ask your GP if they are offering it yet.
If you are paying for it privately you can typically expect to pay anything from £30 - £60 a treatment and you may need to see your chiropractor once per month until the due date.
