You're at your best friend's wedding. You are overjoyed for him on his big day. You watch proudly as he gets married and then head over with the rest of the wedding party to the reception. At dinner, food is served, glasses clink, and you stand. It's time for the best man wedding toasts on your best friend's big day. You open your mouth to speak and '

Here's where things get tricky for many best men. The best man wedding toasts seemed like a slam-dunk at first. How hard can it be to express how happy you are on the day your friend gets married? But when the moment comes and the entire wedding party is focusing on you and waiting expectantly, all those things you had ready in your mind to say can suddenly vanish, leaving you speechless.

Things don't have to turn out this way for the best man. A best man toast may seem easy, but not preparing for it can leave you without words just when you need them the most.

The key thing to remember when giving wedding toasts is that it is a tribute. You don't want to embarrass the bride or groom. Jokes, even slightly embarrassing ones, are fine and have a place within a wedding toast, but don't overdo it. You duty, first and foremost, is to celebrate the bride and groom.

There are some simple ways to do this. You don't need to dig for long, elaborate, fancy quotes from famous people. You don't have to write up the funniest joke. You don't need to tell a dozen stories about your relationship with the bride and groom. All you have to do is rely on yourself.

Start by thinking about how you got the role of best man. There was a reason the groom chose you in particular for this great honor. When you figure out what that reason is, you've got a place to start your toast.

You also want to think about how you know the bride and groom. You probably have some history with the groom. Think back to how you first met. Also think about the bride and groom themselves. It could be helpful to jot down a few adjectives that you think describes each of them well. It may sound silly now, but when you're standing up in front of a crowd you don't want to stumble over your praise. That could make it sound insincere. Think about what you like about the bride and groom now and write it down before you're standing nervously in front of a crowd.

If you yourself are married, you have a whole plethora of experience and knowledge to draw from for your toast. Think about what you have learned from being married. Think about some of the experiences you've had while married that you could not have had before. These could be sincere messages of advice, but there is also a lot of potential for humor here. Just make sure your wife won't be offended in the process.

A best man toast is simple, but that doesn't mean it should be taken lightly. Don't wait until the last second to prepare. Even if it is just notes scrawled on a napkin, prepare your thoughts before you get up and speak. With just a little forethought, you can stand up in front of the wedding part with confidence and deliver a great toast.
