    • 1). Go to the US Census Bureau website and use their interactive map or call 1-866-861-2010 to find a local census office.

    • 2). You can download the application from the website or pick one up at the local census office. Fill out the application and Employment Eligibility Verification form or I-9. The I-9 form is just to verify that you can legally work in the United States.

    • 3). Once you have filled out the forms, call your local census office and make an appointment to take the employment test. This test is used to make sure that you have the basic skills necessary to work part time as a census taker. You can find a sample test on the Census Bureau website.

    • 4). Before you can work as a census taker, you will need to go through a basic background check to make sure that you don't have a criminal record. You will also need to have a valid driver's license and access to a vehicle.

    • 5). There are a variety of jobs available including office work, crew leaders, and going door to door updating address lists and conducting interviews. The hours vary depending on which duty you will be performing. The work will be from 20 to 40 hours per week and opportunities are available for daytime, evening and weekend work.
