The Different Stair Parts

Looking into getting natural hardwoods as stairs is always a great idea.
Hardwoods look amazing and can really add warmth and a natural feel to your home.
There are dozens to choose from so you can find a wood species that is the right shade.
However, there are different stair parts that you may need to evaluate in order to have the right design, the right measurements, and the best ease of installation possible.
The stair tread is the part of the stair that is actually stepped upon.
You can talk with the stair part manufacturer to get exact specifications, as these will be extremely important in order to get the right fit and look for your stairs.
The depth of the tread is measured from the tread's outer edge to the riser.
The width measures from one side to another.
Risers are the pieces that fill in between each stair tread.
However, these are optional, so if you have ever seen stairs that have an "open" look, then these stairs are missing the risers.
Most homes will require risers because of what lies behind the stairs.
Sometimes it is storage, other times it is just another part of the home.
Certain home styles work better with stairs that don't include risers, such as modern or contemporary, but they are always available.
Nosings are another optional piece.
These are the edge of the tread that protrudes over the riser.
A lot of stairs have nosings whereas others may not.
Again, this will be a personal decision when it comes to the design of your home and overall look that you want to portray.
If you don't have risers, typically you don't need to think too much about nosings.
When you hear of stair transitions, this refers to when a piece meets another.
You may have already dealt with a new floor meeting another floor - when one is hardwood and the other is carpet - and you need a piece to make a smooth transition.
A stair nosing can be considered a transition.
If you find that you need pieces to help make the switch from hardwood stairs to another part of flooring, transitions are what you are looking for.
Talk to the manufacturer to discover the best choices for treads, risers, nosings, and transitions for your home.
These pieces are also complex and will need exact measurements in order to be crafted properly so they fit exactly how they are supposed to in your home, so direct contact with the manufacturer will be necessary.
