If you determine that leadership is for you, and you really want to lead in an effective, meaningful and impactful manner, it is incumbent upon you, to begin the process by identifying, developing, and clarifying precisely what role you will serve, as well as how you will proceed.
Doing this means not only creating your priorities, but using your time, energy and other resources effectively, to clearly articulate what your goals and courses of action will be, and what you will do, as a leader, to truly lead your constituency towards being more relevant, sustainable and meaningful.
Begin your efforts focused on the ROLE you want to, and will serve, and perhaps, mnemonics might help you better aim towards what you really need to do.

A true leader must never merely sit back and wait for things to happen, and/ or develop.
Rather, he must consistently and continuously reach out to those you are serving as well as anyone who is a potential constituent.
You must assure that others consider your ideas to be rational, and to do so, you must be ready, willing and able to explain your rationale in terms that others will both care about, as well as buy into.
In today's world, where there is a considerable amount of competition for the attention and participation of others, you must be perceived as being relevant.
How can one achieve this often challenging scenario? Focus on making sure that your words and actions resonate in a positive manner! Replace empty rhetoric with performance and rendering things and situations/ challenges better/ improved! The role you must achieve is one which combines being responsive and responsbible.

A true leader never stands on the sidelines, and merely echoes or follows the lead of others.
One must be ready, willing and able to voice his opinions openly, providing and explaining options, and carefully (but specifically and clearly) opting for the choice you feel is best.
It is far better to do one's best and be an original you, rather than some mere carbon copy of someone else! 3.
Let others get far more involved, and feel a sense of ownership! Listen carefully and effectively, and always aim to consistently learn all you can, to become better and more effective.

You can't fulfill your role as a leader to its optimal potential, unless you take the time, and make the effort to fully evaluate challenges, alternatives, and the best course of action needed to address needs.
Only when someone leads in a truly empathetic way, will others respect what he is trying to achieve.
Encouraging leaders earn respect, and invariably achieve far more for their organization.
Many enter leadership, but far fewer become true leaders.
