- Jeep is the oldest off-road vehicle on the market. It first appeared as the Bantam BRC and was used as a light four-wheel drive car by the military. Since then, the design has been copied and modified by other nations around the world. The Jeep name now is on other models, including three current models, the Grand Cherokee, Compass and Wrangler.
- The 2011 Grand Cherokee has two available engine options. The 3.6 L V-6 engine is standard and gets 290 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 260 foot-pounds of torque at 4,800 rpm. The 5.7 L V-8 engine is an optional feature and gets 360 horsepower at 5,150 rpm and 390 foot-pounds of torque at 4,250 rpm. A five-speed automatic overdrive transmission is standard for all trims. The 3.6 L engine gets 16 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway in four-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive gets one additional mile on the highway. The 5.7 L engine gets 13 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway in four-wheel drive. The rear-wheel drive gets one additional mile in both city and highway driving.
- The Wrangler comes with a 3.8 L V-6 engine. It generates 202 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 237 foot-pounds of torque at 4,000 rpm. A five-speed manual overdrive transmission, and a four-speed automatic overdrive transmission are both available for the 2010 Wrangler. The four-wheel drive models get 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. The rear-wheel drive gets one additional mile on the highway.
- The Compass is Jeep's compact SUV offering. It has two engine options. The 2.0 L inline four-cylinder engine gets 158 horsepower at 6,400 rpm and 141 foot-pounds of torque at 5,000 rpm. The 2.4 L inline four-cylinder engine gets 172 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 165 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm. A five-speed manual overdrive transmission is standard for all trims, with an optional continuously variable transmission. The all-wheel drive, using the five-speed transmission, gets 23 mpg in the city and 28 on the highway. The continuously variable transmission gets 21 mpg in the city and 24 on the highway. The front-wheel drive, using the five-speed transmission and 2.0 L engine, gets 23 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway. The 2.4 L engine gets one fewer mile on the highway. The continuously variable transmission and 2.0 L engine gets 23 mpg in the city and 27 miles on the highway. The 2.4 L engine gets two fewer miles per gallon both in the city and on the highway.
