Minute to Win It Worm Diving Game

Worm Diving is the perfect Minute to Win It game to play with kids, but adults will also love to play along. It uses tasty snack items, equipment that you can make yourself if need be, and rules that can easily be adjusted for the younger set.

The Goal

To lay this game you'll be filling a fishbowl with pretzels, and then using a fishing rod to get one out and eat it. Your bait will be gummy worms that are nice and sticky.

Equipment Needed

One of the great things about these games from Minute to Win It is that you can set things up using whatever you have in the house that will do the job. For example, Worm Diving calls for an actual fishing rod, but if you don't have one handy and don't feel like shelling out for one just to play this game, you can rig something up using a stick and some string. You could even add a reel if you wanted to. Also, if you don't have a fishbowl handy, any clear, large bowl will do the trick.

Here's the official list of equipment, but feel free to make substitutions as needed:
  • A fishbowl
  • A table
  • Twisted pretzels (as opposed to pretzel rods)
  • Gummy worms
  • A fishing rod with string
  • Measuring tape or ruler
  • Masking tape or chalk to mark a foul line
  • A one-minute timer or stop watch

Setting Up the Game

Fill the fishbowl with pretzels (it doesn't have to be filled right up to the brim) and place the bowl on the table. Measure six inches from the table and mark a foul line on the floor in this spot.

Rig up the fishing rod so that the string hangs about 48 inches from the tip of the rod.

Using lukewarm water, wet down a gummy worm and pat it dry so that it's nice and sticky. Tie the worm to the end of the string on the fishing rod. (Do I need to tell you not to use fishing hooks here? Because those are dangerous folks. Don't use them. But you already knew that, I'm sure.)

That's pretty much it - you're ready to play.

How to Play

Before the timer starts, the player stand behind the foul line, holding the fishing rod and facing the bowl of pretzels.

When the one-minute timer begins, the player can now use the rod to "hook" a pretzel from the fishbowl by getting it to stick to the ooey-gooey gummy worm. Then, once a pretzel is "caught," it must be brought back to the player's mouth and she must eat the pretzel before the timer runs out in order to win the game.

The Rules

The rules for Worm Diving are pretty simple:
  • You may not use your hands to touch the string, gummy worm, or pretzel at any point in the game
  • If a pretzel falls off the gummy worm it must be abandoned and another one "caught" on the gummy worm
  • The pretzel must be completely eaten by the end of the one minute to win
  • The player must remain behind the foul line throughout the game

Tips and Tricks

There's not much to offer here on strategy or skills needed, but we can give you some tips to make the game simpler for younger kids.

First, do away with the concept of the foul line, or use it more as a suggestion than a rule. Make the string slightly shorter, and allow kids to pick up the string after snagging a pretzel in order to get the pretzel to their mouths. Whatever works for you and your players is fine -- feel free to change the rules so that any of these Minute to Win It games are more fun for everyone involved.
