    • 1). Download and install OBDII scanning software to your computer. For example, you can install software from OBD-2.com, OBD2 Crazy.com or Scan Tool.net. You may be able to locate shareware programs that are free but expect to pay a fee to download most OBDII software.

    • 2). Plug the OBDII male plug of your OBDII-to-USB cable into the female OBDII port located under the driver's side dash of your automobile.

    • 3). Plug the USB connector into the USB port on your computer and launch the scanning software on your computer.

    • 4). Turn the key on your automobile to the auxiliary position so the dash light illuminates. This activates your car's computer and allows the software on your PC to sync with the OBDII diagnostic port.
