Installing a mechanical turbo requires additional parts and labor. These parts include a belt pulley, manifold, turbo timer, the turbo, an oil cooler and intercooler. According to Peregrin Supercars, the first supercharger was developed by the Swiss Dr. Alfred J. Buchi before1912. In 1915 Dr. Buchi proposed the first turbocharged diesel engine prototype. General Electric (GE) started to develop mechanical turbochargers during the 1910s. GE developed turbochargers for military airplanes. By World War II thousands of mechanical turbochargers were installed on military fighter-planes and bombers. The breakthrough in passenger auto turbocharging occurred in 1978. The first turbocharged passenger car was the Mercedes-Benz 300 SD. - Turbocharged passenger cars are no longer noticed only for improved performance. Some are viewed as a means of reducing fuel consumption and pollution.
