Fold newspaper or 11-inch-by-17-inch paper in half to become 11-inch-by-8.5-inch paper. Then fold the folded paper in half again to determine the center point of the folded paper. Working with the folded part of the paper at the top, fold both top corners of the paper down until they meet together in the center. The result should be a pyramid-shaped paper with a few inches extra at the bottom. Fold up the extra bottom area on both sides of the hat and you're finished. Cut a piece of gold paper 6 inches tall and large enough to wrap around the top of your head for a crown hat base. Draw and then cut tall, pointed tips to create the crown for your hat. Embellish the hat with hand-drawn colored gems, or create gems with sparkles around the hat or at the top of the crown points, if desired. Glue or staple the hat together at the base to finish it.

Creating a birthday party hat is easy. Fold a paper 16 inches across in half and then in half again to result in a paper folded in quarters. Cut the folded paper to create a circle, then cut one straight line from the outer edge of the circle to the center of the circle. Fold the cut paper over itself until you get the size birthday hat you desire, and glue or staple it in place. Embellish with fringe, ribbons, sparkles or stickers. You can also personalize the hat with names.

Make a chef's hat by cutting wide strips of paper 4 inches by 8 inches. Cut another 4-inch-strip long enough to fit around your head for the headband. Lay the head band on a flat surface the long way. Attach the other 4-by-8-inch strips one side of the headband, side by side, then glue the headband in a circle to form the base of the hat. Trace the circle base of the hat onto another piece of paper, and cut it 1 inch smaller than the circle you traced. Gently loop the large paper strips inward to the center of the hat, and attach them to the small circle hanging down in the inside of the hat to finish it.
