    • 1). Pick out designs you like, but first choose where you want to get a tattoo placed on your body.

    • 2). Put on different clothes to determine if the place you want to get a tattoo can easily be covered in case you need to get a job in which exposed tattoos are frowned upon, such as an office building or high-class restaurant.

    • 3). Choose what you want your tattoo to say about yourself or who you want your tattoo to honor. Honoring dead relatives or friends is a common reason for getting a tattoo, but remember: You want to honor them, so keep the design tasteful.

    • 4). Print out or draft a design you like, and bring it to the tattoo parlor. Ask the tattoo artist what he thinks about your design, and tell him where you want to have it done. Most tattoo artists take their job seriously and will advise you against getting a bad tattoo or will sometimes refuse to do it if they think it's a bad idea.

    • 5). Listen to the artist's advice. Putting tattoos on people is the artist's job, and chances are he has more experience on the subject than you do. He will also know what places on your body are more sensitive than others, and if it's your first tattoo, he will probably advise you to get it somewhere less sensitive.
