    Job Responsibilities

    • A tester uses all software.

      A software tester participates with an initial consultation with his internal or external client for the purpose of understanding the scope of a project. Either independently or in a group setting, he creates a testing plan based on the parameters outlined during the client consultation. The tester actively uses the software he is testing, utilizing every function and tool to search for results regarding performance, reliability, bugs and any other failures. Detailed metrics are recorded and edto track the progress and outcomes of the testing process. Testing status is communicated either verbally or in writing to his manager or directly to the client. At the conclusion of testing, he may make recommendations, debug failures and/or perform other tasks required by his client.

    Obtaining Certification

    • Certification is available at three different levels.

      Certification within the area of software quality assurance is available upon successful completion of an examination administered by the Quality Assurance Institute. Additionally, the type of certification awarded is dependent upon a candidate's level of experience. A Certified Associate in Software Quality (CASQ) certification is geared toward entry-level professionals and recent graduates. Its purpose is to indicate that the practitioner has a basic understanding of general concepts, principles and best practices. A Certified Software Quality Analyst (CSQA) certification is for those with some working experience, indicating that the practitioner not only understands concepts but has used them professionally. The highest level of certification is Certified Manager of Software Quality (CMSQ). This is specifically awarded to senior-level professionals with managerial experience.

    Qualitative Requirements

    • A tester must understand programming.

      First and foremost, a software tester must have a deep understanding of computer programming. He must also possess a strong interest in technology and its advancement. Interpersonally, he must be able to immediately gain credibility with the programmers he is working with by being an effective and tactful oral communicator, remaining ethical and honest and understanding the application he is testing. He must also be able to speak in layman terms to any nontechnical colleagues or clients. An astute sensitivity to detail is required, noticing not only what there is but also what there is not. Additionally, candidates possessing a high level of customer service and a drive to perform exceptional work tend to succeed within this role.

    Educational Requirements

    • A four year degree is not mandatory.

      As with many information technology jobs, a 4-year degree is not mandatory to obtain employment as a software tester. Most importantly, candidates should be experienced in the utilization of various computer languages and platforms including C++ and Java. These skills may be obtained by enrolling in a computer science program offered by a junior college, the completion of which entitles the graduate to receive an associate's degree. Alternately, many candidates choose to pursue a formal information technology program administered by a proprietary school. Graduates from programs such as these receive a formal certificate of completion. Additionally, formal certification as a software tester is available through the Quality Assurance Institute.

    Average Compensation

    • The average tester earns about $70K.

      CBSalary.com reports that the average annual salary of a software quality assurance tester employed in the United States is $70,597. In addition to a salary above the national average, the United States Department of Labor Statistics expects employment within the software publishing industry to increase by 32 percent, a rate that is almost three times faster than most other industries.
