How to Change a Speedometer on a 2004 Toyota 4x4 Truck
- 1). Remove the cable from the negative battery terminal to avoid a short circuit while working on the vehicle. Bend the cable well away so that it is not touching the battery.
- 2). Locate the retaining screws on the instrument panel which is directly behind the steering wheel. Remove the screws that are located around the outer rim of the instrument panel and pull the unit out and up, but do not completely remove it.
- 3). Locate the single cable leading from the back of the speedometer and disconnect it by loosening the integrated nut with an open-end wrench. Remove the retaining screws that connect the speedometer to the back of the instrument panel, pull out the old speedometer and set it aside.
- 4). Open up the the new speedometer by firmly gripping the back case and twisting it open. Insert the provided light bulb into the light assembly socket and close the speedometer.
- 5). Place the new speedometer into the opening in the back of the instrument panel and reinstall the retaining screws. Insert the speedometer cable into the new speedometer and use the open-end wrench to tighten the integrated nut.
- 6). Push the instrument panel back in place and reinstall the retaining screws. Reattach the cable to the negative battery terminal, start the engine and follow the speedometer manufacturer's instructions for calibration.
