How to Check the Transmission Oil Level on a 1970 Yamaha Champ

    • 1). Park the 1970 Yamaha Champ on a level surface so that the transmission fluid is level. Once the Champ is in "Park," leave the engine running so that the engine can warm up. While the engine is running, locate the black TRZ cap, which is the transmission cap, on the left rear side of the engine.

    • 2). Once you have located the black TRZ cap, loosen the cap by turning it counterclockwise. After the cap is loosened, lift the cap straight up to reveal the transmission dipstick. Using your cotton hand towel, wipe the dipstick completely clean. Reinsert the dipstick all the way into the transmission.

    • 3). Lift the black cap again to reveal the dipstick. Look at the bottom tip of the dipstick. There are two lines for measurements. The bottom line is labeled "Add" and the top line is labeled "Full." If the magenta line is any other color, you need to change the transmission fluid. If the fluid is below the "Add" line you need to add Yamaha two-stroke transmission fluid. If the fluid is to the "Full" line, there is no need to add anything.
