    • 1). Cast on 42 stitches. "Cast on" means to create the first set of stitches on the knitting needle. Cast on by creating a slip knot and placing it on the left needle. Place the right needle through the slip knot and behind the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the right needle and pull through the slip knot to create a new loop. Place the new loop on the left needle. Repeat this until 42 stitches are created.

    • 2). Divide the stitches evenly onto three of the knitting needles. Join the stitches in the round. To join the stitches in the round, knitting all of the stitches on the three needles, knitting the first stitch with the yarn from creating the last stitch.

To knit, insert the right needle into the first stitch on the left needle from front to back so that the right needle is behind the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the right needle from right to left, forming a loop. Slide the right needle down and under the left needle, keeping the loop below the tip of the needle. With the right needle, slide the new stitch off the left needle. There is now a new stitch on the right needle. Continue in each stitch this way until all stitches are transferred to the right needle. Repeat on the remaining three needles to knit one round.

    • 3). Knit five rounds of knit one, purl one ribbing. For knit one, purl one ribbing, knit the first stitch and purl the second stitch. Repeat around all three needles for one round.

To purl, insert the right needle through the front of the stitch on the left needle, from right to left, so that the right needle is in front of the left needle. Wrap the yarn around the right needle from right to left. Slide the right needle down and under the left needle, keeping the loop below the tip of the needle. With the right needle, slide the new stitch off the left needle.

    • 4). Knit around round until the piece measures 12 inches long from the beginning.

    • 5). Work five rounds of knit one, purl one ribbing.

    • 6). Cast off all stitches. To "cast off" means to end the piece of work you are knitting. Cast off by knitting two stitches and drawing the first stitch over the second stitch and off of the right needle. Repeat until only one stitch is left on the right needle.

    • 7). Cut a six-inch tail of yarn. Using the yarn needle, draw the yarn tail through the last remaining stitch. Pull tightly to secure. Weave in the loose ends of yarn by sewing three stitches with the yarn needle and then cutting the yarn.

    • 8). Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to form a second legwarmer.
