The United States government dictates the ways that a United States flag can be displayed. Variations of flag display for the United States flag exist for different situations and locations, according to the United States Department of Veterns Affairs, USHistory.org and USFlag.org. When displaying a flag other than the U.S. flag, follow etiquette associated with the nation or organization of that specific flag. - The United States flag may be displayed from a flag pole, with the union part of the flag closest to the top of the pole. Other flags may be displayed on the same flag pole, underneath the United States flag. If a U.S. flag is being displayed outdoors, it must be removed at dusk and put back up at dawn. If the flag is an all-weather flag, it may remain outdoors at night if there is illumination directly on the flag. All-weather flags must still be removed during bad weather. If the U.S. flag is being displayed in an area with several flagpoles, it must be the highest and largest if the other flags are not from other nations. If the other flags are flags from other nations, they must all be the same height and size.
United States flags may also be displayed outdoors on a staff. The staff may be a standing staff, or a staff that is attached at an angle from a building.
The U.S. flag may also be displayed over a street, with the union part of the flag facing north or east. If the flag is displayed over a sidewalk, the union must face away from the nearest building. - The United States flag may be displayed indoors in several ways. It may be displayed flat against a wall, with the union part facing the viewer's left. The flag may be displayed in a window so that the union field of stars is to an outside observer's left.
The U.S. flag may be displayed indoors on a staff, with the union part nearest to the highest point of the staff. If the flag is being used next to a podium, it must be to the right of the speaker. Staffed flags indoors must be larger and more prominently displayed than other flags (state flags or community flags). If you are crossing the United States flag with another flag, the U.S. flag should be displayed to the viewer's left. - For funeral service, the United States flag may be draped over a casket with the union part of the flag over the head and left shoulder area. The flag should be removed prior to burial. There may also be occasions where the flag can be flown at half staff, where the flag is raised to the height of the flag pole or staff and then lowered half of the distance to the ground.
