Sentence Basics

• Sentences make up a major element of written communication in various forms. Complete sentences include words, expressions or thoughts that typically beginning with a capitalized word and end with punctuation such as a period or exclamation point. Sentences are generally defined by proper syntax, according to Merriam-Webster. This means that, opposed to fragments or incomplete sentences, complete sentences include complete thoughts, often with a noun, verb and/or an adjective.

• One sentence conveys a singular thought or expressions about a subject. Multiple sentences that are interrelated and presented together in one written document form the foundation for many types of written communications. Letters, emails, reports and other formal documents are all based on sentences that flow together to present a succinct theme or message. • Statements have multiple, broad applications relative to sentences. To begin with, a statement can include verbal, written or nonverbal messages. A statement is a single declaration that typically reports on fact or opinion. Written statements can include multiple sentences and a statement is generally much longer than a single sentence. The expression "make a statement" can have both literal and figurative interpretations. You can literally issuing a verbal or written statement, or figuratively make a statement through nonverbal actions that prove a point.
  
  

Applications of Statements

• Public statements are often made by politicians or public figures when sharing important messages with a community. An individual or group can make a statement of support by symbolizing or recognizing someone or something through action. Businesses issue a variety of financial statements that serve as declarations of financial performance. These are used by shareholders and company managers to make decisions about the current and future financial position of the company. A witness is asked to give a statement to police in support of an investigation.
