Tiny crab apples can be added to create a homespun touch to any craft. Consider any craft made with crab apples as disposable, since the fruit will rot within a few weeks, depending on the environment where the craft is displayed. - Turn crab apples into Christmas tree ornaments or additions to decorative wreaths for a country Christmas display. Tie string around the stems of crab apples to hang from holiday tree branches. Optionally, spray the exterior of the crab apples with craft spray glue and roll in glitter for a sparkling look. Alternatively, tie the crab apples to a Christmas wreath by tying the apple stems to the wreath with string or wire.
- Use one crab apple as a head, and make an "appleman" for an autumnal version of a snowman. Stack three different-sized apples on top of each other, with a crab apple at the top for the head. Hold the apples together by inserting a cut portion of a wooden skewer or a toothpick between the apples, with half the skewer in the apple below and the other half in the apple above. Insert two toothpicks into the sides of the middle apple for arms. Create a face on the crab apple at the top by applying small candies to the apple with cake frosting. A small dab of the icing directly on the apple acts as an edible glue to hold the candies in place. Use your appleman as a centerpiece for a table, or as a mantle decoration.
- Insert crab apples into a fall flower arrangement. Attach a crab apple to the end of a long bamboo skewer. Repeat with as many apples as you want to add to the arrangement, and place the skewers among the flowers in a decorative vase or hollowed pumpkin.
- Use crab apples to create tiny, all-natural air fresheners known as pomander balls. Rather than opting for the traditional citrus fruit, crab apples make a tinier version of these crafts. Poke holes into a crab apple with a skewer, and insert the pointed end of whole cloves into each of the holes until the crab apple is covered. Tie a string around the stem of the crab apple for hanging. Hang the apple in an area where you want to freshen the air and add a spicy scent.
