What Impact Are You Having On Those Around You?
I saw them again.
The gal that always runs in my neighborhood, and the guy that is always walking with his headphones on.
There are others too.
The older gentleman who walks on Thursdays.
The cycling group that rides on Saturdays.
These are the people I see regularly when I'm out for my morning run.
I expect to see them.
I feel a kind of camaraderie with them.
I notice when they're not out and wonder where they are.
In a round-about way, they hold me accountable.
If I ever think about not going for a run, I think, "I know the regular exercisers are out there, I better get going!" Your daily choices impact those around you.
Whether you know it or not, you even have an impact on people you don't know.
What are your actions saying? What impact are you having? Ensure you have a positive impact.
1.
Walk your talk.
Most people can "give the right answer," but it's more important to live it.
You've heard the saying, "Actions speak louder than words.
" At work, managers may say they value work/life balance, but are they achieving the balance themselves? On a personal level, an individual may say they value their health, yet not make lifestyle choices that show it.
Your actions, show what's really important to you; more than your words ever will.
2.
Be consistent.
Those people on my running route can expect to see me, just like I expect to see them.
When you consistently do something, it's obvious to other people that it's important and real.
In the past when I've decided to try something new, I usually tried to get others on board and try it too.
The response I most often got was, "If you keep doing it, then I'll consider trying it.
" Consistency = Real.
You can be known either for what you consistently do or what you consistently "say" you're going to do.
You impact people accordingly.
3.
Who's watching you, and what do they see? Observe for a week, all the people you come into contact with throughout the course of a week.
When do you see them and what's the context? What do they see and how does it impact them? I'm impacted by the people I see at the gym, the people I work with, my family.
I'm constantly observing their behaviors and evaluating the value of them.
I have changed my lifestyle more than once because of what I saw other people doing and the results they were getting.
If someone were to make a lifestyle change based on your example, would that be a good thing? What do you consistently do and who sees you? You have an impact, whether you know it or not.
Make your impact a positive one.
