This may seem like a very simple step in some cases but it is the most important step in the journey of making your first dollar off your blog.
Now, for some of you the topic would be pre decided but for majority of you will need to decide upon a topic.
This could be a tedious task to do.
However, over the years, I have developed a nice way of finding niches.

com where people list their most sought after goals and then record the progress of it.

com you will find various niches sorted in the order of popularity.
This site proves to be a good way of getting close to choosing a niche basis its market demand.
To further develop the niche, use the Google keyword suggestion tool.
This tool suggests around 100 closely related keywords on the topic you selected.
These keywords are the most searched terms on Google that are related to the keyword that you initially enter into the keyword tool.
The main idea is to get those keywords that have less competition and are high in demand.

Once you have a list of such keywords ready, you need to create the blueprint of your blog.
A tree like structure of the blueprint needs to be prepared with the main keyword as the main page and the branches of the tree as the tier pages.
For example your main keyword is weight loss which would be the topic of the blog.
However the tier pages could be the related keywords as weight loss recipes, weight loss programs, weight loss exercises.
Furthermore within the weight loss programs you could have links to pages on free weight loss program or fast weight loss programs.
