    • 1). Practice with the airbrush on paper or cardboard before using the airbrush on the cake. Hold the airbrush closer to the practice surface and straight up and down for fine lines and markings, and at a distance and angle for broad areas. Use even strokes for consistency.

    • 2). Plan your design out fully before putting it on the cake, or use stencils that can be purchased from baking supply stores. A color wheel can help you choose complimentary colors. Decide in which order the colors will go on, starting with light colors first.

    • 3). Chill the cake to ensure the icing has set. Warm icing may be ruined by the air pressure of the airbrush gun.

    • 4). Drape your work area with a plastic sheet to protect the surfaces. Set up all the equipment: the airbrush, colors, stands, squeeze bottle of hot water, container or towel to catch excess paint. Bring out the cake last.

    • 5). Choose which color you want and pour that liquid in the cup on the airbrush, but don't fill it to the top. If you put in too much, it may spill as you use it. Apply the color as you have practiced. If you are using a template, position that flatly and spray the color directly on, not at an angle.

    • 6). Switch colors by pouring hot water in the color cup and blowing out the excess color onto the towel or into the container, making sure the water blows clear before adding more color.
