What Are the New Jobs for Alternative Energy?
- As with other industries, alternative-energy sectors require skills that support business operations. Entry-level and advanced positions exist for a range of backgrounds and work experience. Some of the business skills needed include clerical, computer operations and information technology, communications and outreach, human resources, accounting and finance, sales and marketing, and customer service.
- Alternative-energy and green collar industries have a strong need for trades people such as electricians; mechanics; plumbers; and heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) technicians. The construction industry offers many trades jobs where energy efficiency and renewable-energy technologies are integrated in new and existing buildings.
Other technician jobs can be found in transportation and manufacturing. Technicians are also in high demand for renewable-energy jobs and often work as system installers or integrators of solar or wind energy systems for commercial and residential buildings. - Science and engineering are essential to the advancement of alternative technologies. There are jobs in research, development and demonstration (RD&D) of new or emerging technologies in government, manufacturing and academic institutions. In addition, companies in the private sector, such as environmental consulting firms or energy services companies, employ professionals with technical college degrees. Most technical degrees can find a match for employment in alternative energy.
- The demand for building professionals has been increasing because of the need to improve older buildings and construct environmentally sustainable ones. Architects, engineers, HVAC and insulation technicians, and energy auditors can find jobs at companies focusing on energy services, weatherization and general construction.
Building-auditing jobs can also require special training and certifications in building sciences. Energy-audit and inspection services involve assessing a building's energy performance and recommending upgrades. Good verbal and report-writing skills are desirable for building professionals.
