How to Apply Rickrack
- 1). Rickrack is a woven thread product that tends to shrink with its first washing, so wash your rickrack, dry it and press it with an iron. Washing and pressing the rickrack prior to use will keep it flat after it's applied to a garment, even after many washings.
- 2). If you're adding rickrack to the edge of a garment, fold the edge under about 1/4 inch and press the edge flat with an iron. If the rickrack won't be on an edge, draw a pencil line on the item where you want the rickrack placed.
- 3). Pin the rickrack in place on the pencil line or on the wrong side of the edge of the fabric, starting in the most inconspicuous place where the pieces join. For an edging, pin the rickrack so the tips of the zigzags will show from the front and so that you can sew through the middle of the rickrack and still catch the edge of the fabric.
- 4). Stitch the rickrack in place using the method of your choice. Rickrack along an edge does best with machine sewing in a straight stitch with about 12 stitches to the inch. Apply rickrack to the front of a garment or crafts project with hand stitching or by machine. If using your sewing machine, sew through the middle of the rickrack in a straight line, overlapping the ends slightly and folding the top end under. If stitching by hand, tack each point by hand from the backside of the fabric. This method ensures that the rickrack will not cup or curl.
