How to Make a Yoshi Kids Costume
- 1). Draw a line with fabric pen going across the center of your baseball hat from one side to the other. Use the button at the top of your hat as a guide and you want to draw the line so that it cuts your hat into two halves the front half with the bill and the back half.
- 2). Sew your hat into the hood of your hoodie, lining up the top edge of the hood with the line you drew across your hat. Sew with thick green thread and close tight stitches to make it secure.
- 3). Cut out two large ovals from your white felt, 4 inches tall and about 3 inches wide. Cut out two smaller ovals from black felt 2 inches tall and about 1 inch wide. Glue a black oval in the center of one of your larger white ovals and repeat with the other two pieces. These will be your Yoshi eyes.
- 4). Sew the eyes centered onto the front area of your hat about an inch apart from each other. To make this easy sew five or six loops in the center of the black pupils with black thread and knot off thread on the inside of your hat.
- 5). Cut two thin strips of black felt 2 inches in length. Glue the strips onto the bill of the hat vertically parallel to each other and two inches apart. These strips will form the nostrils on the bill of the hat which will be the nose of the Yoshi costume.
- 6). Lay your hoodie out on a flat surface and smooth out any wrinkles. With a black fabric pencil draw a large curve from the left side of the collar to the left side of the bottom of the hoodie and repeat on the other side.
- 7). Lay a thin sheet of tissue paper over the front of your hoodie and trace this oval shape onto the paper, then cut out the shape. This will be the pattern for your Yoshi belly.
- 8). Pin your pattern onto white felt and trace it onto felt with black fabric pen, then cut out your pattern and pin and sew it onto the front of your hoodie. Use fabric pen to draw vertical lines across the oval shape 4 inches apart from each other going from the top to the bottom of your oval.
- 9). Have your child put on the hoodie and hat sewn inside of it to see how it will fit and measure for the ridges of Yoshi's backside. Measure from the crown of your child's head to the nape of his neck and divide this measurement by three to find a length for the three ridges that go down Yoshi's head.
- 10
Cut three half circles out of red craft foam the length you measured for the ridges and 4 inches in height. For example, if you measured from crown to the nape of the neck 12 inches, you will cut three ridges that are 4 inches wide and 4 inches tall. - 11
Starting at the crown of the hoodie, sew one of your red ridges going down the back of the hoodie with the thick green thread. Sew another ridge next to the first continuing down the back and repeat with the final ridge. - 12
Have your child put the hoodie and sewn-in hat back on and you should have a Yoshi head with the characteristic red ridges going down the top back part of the hoodie. Throw on green sweatpants and red or white shoes to complete the costume.
