    Function

    • A motorcycle license is required to operate a vehicle that meets your state's particular specifications. In most cases, a motorcycle is considered a vehicle that has a seat/saddle with not more than three wheels on the ground. Exclusions are tractors and all-terrain vehicles with three wheels.

    Types

    • Most states will have several types of motorcycle licenses open to applicants. A traditional motorcycle license can be obtained after the person has earned his permit. Age requirements for a motorcycle permit are between 14 and 16 years old in each state. In order to take the test for a motorcycle license, you will need to hold an instruction permit for 6 months. Some states also have a motor-driven cycle license that gives a license to individuals who plan to ride a motorcycle, motor scooter, motorized bicycle or similar conveyance with less than 50 cc of displacement.

    Time Frame

    • On average to get a motorcycle license, the person must be at least 16 years of age. After earning the permit, you will wait 6 months and then take the exams required to upgrade to a regular motorcycle license. On average, the license will stay valid between 4 and 6 years. At this point, you will need to renew the motorcycle license in order to keep it current.

    Solution

    • You will need to complete both a written exam and road test at your state's Department of Motor Vehicles. The written test will cover laws that you must abide by while operating a motorcycle. The road test will determine that your motorcycle driving ability is up to par. You are also required to pass a vision test as well as pay any fees to the DMV in order to get the license. Some states, like Alaska, allow you to forgo the road test and written test if you present a course completion card from the Motorcycle Safety Foundation. This card will show that you have passed one of the motorcycle instruction courses given by the group.

    Considerations

    • Some states require that you have a motor vehicle license before you can earn a motorcycle license. Also, if you are under the age of 18, you will need a signed parental consent form with a notarized seal.
