How to Change Rear Brakes on a 98 Katana?
- 1). Lift the Katana onto its center stand. Pry the brake pad cover off the bottom of the rear brake caliper, using the tip of a small, flat-head screwdriver.
- 2). Pull the pin clip out of the ends of both brake pad pins, using needle-nose pliers. Place one hand under the brake caliper mouth, then pull the brake pad pins out of the brake caliper, using needle-nose pliers. Both brake pads and two brake pad springs will drop into your hand.
- 3). Pull the metal shim plates off both brake pad back plates. Discard the old brake pads. Coat the new brake pad back plates with a high-temperature grease, then press the shim plates onto the back plates. Hook the pad springs around the bottom of both brake pads.
- 4). Spray the caliper mouth, inner caliper piston and the surrounding area with a brake cleaner spray to remove dirt and debris. Push the caliper piston into the rear brake caliper, by hand.
- 5). Push the new brake pads into the rear brake caliper mouth. Hold the brake pads in place and push both brake pad pins into the caliper. Insert the pad clip into the holes drilled into both brake pad pins. Snap the cover onto the bottom of the brake caliper.
- 6). Pump the rear brake pedal until you feel resistance, indicating that the brake pads have been pressed against the rear brake disc.
