How to Create Wall Hangings With Kids
- 1). Use a tape measure or yardstick to measure the height and width of the wall space to determine how large you want the rectangular, handmade wall hanging to be.
- 2). Add 4 inches to the height of the vertical wall hanging and 2 inches to the width, and then use a ruler and tailor's chalk to mark the measurements onto a piece of felt, denim or cotton fabric. Cut out the shape with pinking shears or a pair of sharp scissors.
- 3). Fold 1 inch of fabric along the left side of the back of the wall hanging and secure it with straight pins. Use a sewing machine stitch--a straight or zigzag line--with a contrasting color of thread 1/2 inch in from the edge. Repeat the process with the right side and the bottom of the wall hanging.
- 4). Create a "pocket" to help hang the wall hanging by folding back the top 3 inches of the fabric and securing it with straight pins. Machine stitch a line across the top, 2 inches in from the edge.
- 5). Let your child decorate the wall hanging with pictures of family, friends, pets or heartthrobs, along with memorabilia such as ticket stubs and notes from friends. Affix the items with double-stick tape. Embellish with accents such as stickers, die cuts, paper flowers, buttons and chipboard letter shapes secured with dabs of fabric glue.
- 6). Display the wall hanging by pinning a long safety pin to the end of a piece of ribbon that's two times longer than the width of the wall hanging. Thread the ribbon through the "pocket" at the top of the wall hanging, using the safety pin to guide the ribbon. Tie a knot on the ends of the ribbon, and use the strand to hang the banner on a hook.
