Guide Review - Review of Action Game 'Rage: Mutant Blast TV!' for the Apple iPhone and iPod
Rage: Mutant Blast TV! is a prequel to the much-hyped first-person shooter from id Software and, as a mobile game, it is best viewed as an appetizer instead of a full course. Taking an old-school Running Man premise, you're thrown into a kill-or-be-killed game show, a circus-like sideshow against post-apocalypse mutants. The first noticeable thing in the shooter are the crisp graphics: It comes in a SD (standard definition) and a more expensive HD (high definition) mode, which shows how serious the visuals hit - in fact, it only works on the latest iPhone and iPod. The HD is worth the extra buck, with dissolving bodies, bloody walls, and deformed enemies practically creating a stench. The game itself is straight rail shooter, not unlike Doom Resurrection. The focus is on tilting to aim and switching through the handful of weapons, but it does limit your ability to explore the vast levels.
There are some genuine scares to be found here and a ton of atmosphere. The cheap price and groundbreaking graphics make it worth a spin, though it is more apt to get you excited for the real Rage coming next fall than to satisfy you on its on.
