Music Mixer Software - Pro Tools vs Garageband...FIGHT!
For me that program was Pro Tools for years but I have to hold my hands up now and say that I only use Garageband these days. The reason is that it makes recording a high quality demo really really fast.
If you are just starting out with your home studio I recommend you cheat a little and find a friend who is also into recording. Ask him of her which pieces of gear they use most often and then just buy the same stuff.
This works so well because whenever you have a problem or can't work out how to use something you can just jump on the phone with your friend and hey presto...headache sorted!
THE PROBLEM WITH PRO TOOLS
Now everyone and his brother will tell you that Pro Tools is the best music mixer software on the planet and to be honest I would not disagree with that. It can do an amazing amount of things and is used in all the top studios around the world. Plus the automation is second to none!
But the problem I had when I first got the software was trying to work out how to use it. I think I had run out of credits with my friend who seemed to be ignoring my 35th call that day for more Pro Tools advice, and that was before I even got any music going.
In my opinion your recording set up should be like a third arm and not stand in the way of your creative juices.
The Pro Tools manual is massive and by the end you are even more confused than ever.
The only way to really get good at it is to work with it everyday and start with really simple recordings.
Final thoughts.
If you want a piece of music mixer software that can grow as your own recording skill does you should go for Pro Tool because it has so many ways you can manipulate the sound.
But if you just want to work quick with a tiny amount of hassle and gear you have to go for Garageband...no question about it!
Good luck.
