Every Women Matters
During the late 80's and early 90's, a survey of Nebraska women was done to determine their compliance to recommended guidelines for mammography screening. Nebraska ranked 3rd from the bottom of states who followed the recommended guidelines of a baseline at age 35-40 every 2 years between 40-50 and one every year after age 50. The State then received a grant from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta to start the wheels rolling for a comprehensive program to encourage women to have regular pap smears and mammograms as well as seeing the health care provider on an annual basis.
Rather than developing mammography screening vans and special sites, the Nebraska Department of Health determined that the best way to carry out this project would be to invite physicians across the state to become providers for the program. This encourages women to continue seeing their personal physician. There are now nearly 400 physician providers in the state.
The Nebraska Nurses Association has been an EVERY WOMEN MATTERS PARTNER since the inception of the program. NNA's role has been to provide inkind or match dollars by teaching women about the program and how to do Self Breast Exam. NNA members are presenting programs at senior centers, commodity sites, churches, social clubs, health fairs, craft shows, work sites, or any place women gather. They are also doing one-on-one education.
During the first 5 years the program has been in existence, NNA has contributed over $18,000 of inkind dollars by contributing our time. Most of the recorded time has been contributed by District 1. During these 5 years, 77 cervical cancers have been diagnosed 3 were invasive, 23 breast cancers have been diagnosed and. all have been treated appropriately.
Statistics indicate that 80% of new breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50, so most of EVERY WOMAN MATTERS' educational efforts will be focused on this age group. Most breast cancers are not hereditary, but women who have a mother, sister or daughter who have breast cancer are considered to be at higher risk than the general population. According to current statistics, 1 in 8 or 9 women will develop breast cancer in her lifetime. Breast cancer occurs in men at the rate of about 1 in 10,000.
Statistics sound bleak, but there's good news, too, because the more you know, the better are your odds for cure. If breast cancer is detected early and still localized, the five year survival rate is 92%. However, when detected later, when the disease has spread, the five year survival rate drops to 18%.
The real key to saving womens' lives is in empowering then to take responsibility for their health, do regular BSE, see their health care provider on a regular basis and have mammograms and pap smears as recommended.
NNA members can continue to make a difference in women's lives by becoming involved in EVERY WOMAN MATTERS doing teaching, promotion, and helping with coalition activities.
