Custom Glass Cutting
- 1). Lay your piece of glass on a clean, flat work surface. The glass must make even contact across the entire work surface in order for you to make a safe cut.
- 2). Pour enough mineral spirits into an empty tin can to fill it halfway. Immerse the cutting head of the glass cutter in the mineral spirits.
- 3). Position your straight edge over the glass where you wish to make the cut. Place a spring clamp on each end of the straight edge to hold it in position while you make the cut.
- 4). Dip the paintbrush into the can of mineral spirits. Spread a thin coat of mineral spirits along the side of the straight edge. This step reduces chipping while you score the glass with the cutter.
- 5). Put on your eye protection and gloves.
- 6). Remove the glass cutter from the can. Start at one edge of the glass. Apply firm, even pressure to the cutter and score a single line across the surface of the glass. Use the straight edge as a guide by holding the side of the cutter against it while scoring the line.
- 7). Remove the clamps and straight edge.
- 8). Position the scored line directly over the edge of your work surface. Grasp the edge of the glass sheet overhanging the work surface, raise it slightly and bring it down sharply. The glass will break evenly along the scored line.
