- 1). Park your Focus on a level surface and set the parking brake. Remove the tire jack and tools from the cargo area. Work on one front wheel at a time. Loosen the lug nuts with a lug wrench, but do not remove them at this time. Place the jack under the body sill just behind the front tire you wish to start with and turn the handle in a clockwise direction until the wheel is off the ground. Finish removing the lug nuts, then remove the wheel.
- 2). Remove the plastic protective plugs from the caliper retaining bolts on the inboard side of the brake caliper by prying them out with a flat-blade screwdriver. Remove the caliper bolts with a 7 mm Allen wrench turned in a counterclockwise direction.
- 3). Hold the caliper or support it in such a way that the rubber brake line still attached to it does not get stretched or damaged in any way. Hang the caliper with a piece of wire to the inside of the wheel housing, if desired. Pry up the metal clip on the caliper that holds the brake pads into place with a flat-blade screwdriver. Slide the two pads out of the caliper and discard them.
- 4). Depress the piston back into the caliper by placing a C-clamp over the piston and the body of the caliper. Turn the handle on the clamp in a clockwise direction until the caliper has fully seated. Remove the C-clamp. Slide new brake pads into the caliper, making sure the metal backing plates are facing outwards. Swing the metal clip back over the pads until it snaps into place.
- 5). Slide the brake caliper back over the brake rotor and line up the caliper mounting holes. Thread the retaining bolts back into the mounting holes and tighten with a 7 mm Allen wrench in a clockwise direction. Push the plastic plugs back over the bolts until they snap into place.
- 6). Replace the wheel and tighten the lug nuts with the lug wrench. Lower the jack and tighten the lugs nuts in a crisscross pattern.
- 7). Repeat steps 1 through 6 for the other front wheel. Place the tire jack and tools back into the cargo area.
