Task lighting is functional lighting that is designed for a specific purpose. The most common use of task lighting is in the kitchen area. Lights are used under cabinetry to aid in the tasks of chopping, mixing and measuring. There are several kinds of fixtures you can use for task lighting, as well as several kinds of lights. Lights and fixtures have their own pros and cons. - The pros of strip lights are that they provide even, diffused light, so there is an even concentration of light from its source. The fixture is long and rectangular and can be 12 to 24 inches wide. This type of task lighting is the most common and can be used with various bulb types. The cons are that the housings can be bulky and obvious, especially if the transformer is built inside.
- These are small, circular lights that are separated by several inches of wire. They cast small pools of light on to the counter top, and many people view them as the most aesthetically pleasing of task lights. The lights also are called disc lights and can be used with halogen, LED and xenon bulbs. Unfortunately, they are the weakest and least effective kind of task lighting. A Consumer Reports test done on battery-operated puck lights stated that the light quality was dim and poor.
- Linear lights are small, rectangular lights that are separated by flexible cable. The cable allows for the lights to follow curves and turns of the cabinetry. The small bulbs can be adjusted along the cable wherever the homeowner chooses. Like puck lights, linear lights can be used with halogen, LED and xenon bulbs. These lights are sold only at lighting stores and on the Internet. They also tend to be more expensive than other types of lights.
- Desk lamps come in a variety of sizes and designs. They often have a removable shade that allows the owner to control the brightness of light they provide. They are placed on desks, counter tops and tables. They often provide extra light for reading. Desk lamps can have low wattage consumption, which is good for the environment and your wallet, but they can be tipped over and potentially cause fires. They can vary greatly in weight. If you choose a desk lamp, you might want a heavier model to avoid tipping.
