    Model Availability

    • Dodge offered the 5.7-liter Hemi engine as an upgrade in its 2005 Ram 1500 half-ton truck and 2005 Durango sport utility vehicle. The company installed this engine as standard in its 2005 Ram 2500 three-quarter-ton and Ram 3500 one-ton trucks. Dodge sold its Ram trucks in a number of trim levels, bed lengths and cab sizes, including two- or three-person regular cab and four- to six-person extended and super cab models. It offered the Power Wagon trim as an upgrade for the 2500 models. Durango models always featured four doors and seven-passenger seating and also sold in different trim levels. All four-wheel-drive models of the Ram 3500 had dual wheels on the rear axle.

    Engine

    • In 2005, the 5.7 liter Hemi V-8 consisted of an iron block and aluminum heads. It had two valves per cylinder and used multiport electronic fuel injection. This engine's bore measured 3.92 inches and its stroke measured 3.58 inches. The engine had a compression ratio of 9.6-to-1. When installed in the Ram 1500 or Ram 2500, Dodge's 5.7-liter produced 345 horsepower at 5,400 rpm and 375 foot-pounds of torque at 4,200 rpm. In the Durango this engine generated 335 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 370 foot-pounds of torque. In the Ram 3500, this engine cranked out 330 horsepower 4,800 rpm and 375 foot-pounds of torque at 4,200 rpm.

    Transmissions

    • Dodge used the Hemi in the four-wheel-drive Ram 1500 models with either a six-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission with overdrive, with the latter transmission also offered as an upgrade in some configurations. The Ram 2500 featured a six-speed manual as standard with a four- or five-speed automatic with overdrive as upgrades. Dodge equipped the Ram 3500 with a standard six-speed manual and offered a five-speed manual or four- or five-speed automatics as options. The four-wheel-drive Durango models all had a five-speed automatic with overdrive.

    Fuel Economy

    • Fuel economy of these trucks or SUVs depended on the model. A 2005 Ram 1500 with the Hemi engine and automatic transmission earned 12 mpg during city driving and 16 mpg on the highways; Dodge installed a 35-gallon fuel tank in these models. Ram 2500 models rated 12 to 13 mpg in the city and 15 to 16 mpg during highway driving; these trucks came equipped with 34-gallon tanks. The 2005 Dodge Durango had a 34-gallon tank and was rated at 13 mpg city and 18 mpg highway.

    Towing

    • A 2005 Ram 1500 had a maximum towing capacity of 8,650 pounds. The Ram 2500 models pulled up to 13,000 pounds and the 3500 models pulled up to 15,850 pounds. Durango models towed up to 8,650 pounds.
