How to Set Up Landscaping Lights

    • 1). Run the wiring from your main electrical box to the end point where the lighting is being installed. Work around any any obstacles, such as trees, and buried utility lines. Lay the light or lights on the ground near the wire.

    • 2). Drill a hole through the exterior wall near your main electrical box. Leave at least 3 inches between the hole and the electrical box so you can install the junction box.

    • 3). Punch out one of the knockout holes on the back of the junction box. Place the junction box against the wall and place it so the hole lines up over the hole you drilled in the wall. Screw the junction box to the wall.

    • 4). Dig a trench where the wiring is being buried. Follow you local building codes when digging the trench but usually you need to dig 6 inches deep. Make the trench wide enough to accommodate the metal conduit or PVC pipe that the wiring will run through.

    • 5). Measure and cut the PVC or metal conduit for the cable. Place the conduit into the trench.

    • 6). Attach a nipple to an LB fitting. The LB fitting is a right-angle-shaped part that connects the junction box to the conduit on the outside. The nipple is a part that connects the LB fitting and the conduit.

    • 7). Attach the LB fitting to the junction box.

    • 8). Measure and cut a length of conduit to fit between the LB fitting and the conduit in the ground. Attach the conduit to the LB fitting and secure it to the wall with conduit straps.

    • 9). Run string through the junction box and the conduit on the side of the house and through the conduit in the trench. Tie a metal washer to the end of the string to weigh it down and make it easier to get through the conduit.

Connect the conduit in the trench to the conduit attached to the side of the house.

    • 11

Take the washer off of the string and tape or tie the string to one end of the electrical cable. Go to the junction box and pull the string until the wire is pulled through the junction box.

    • 12

      Backfill the trench with dirt.

    • 13

Connect the wiring to the device outside, following the manufacturer's instructions.

Call a certified electrician to inspect the wiring and connect it to your main electrical box.
