    Thickness and Inspection

    • Stucco is usually applied in layers. Each layer has a different thickness requirement. When you are re-applying stucco on top of stucco the general thickness of the wall surface will increase. A wall with multiple applications of stucco may be too thick, which may prevent you from noticing any future cracks in the foundation or surface beneath the finish.

    Patching

    • Cleaning the old stucco surface using a large brush will allow you to repair cracks and damage and prepare the surface for bonding with the new stucco application. A bonding agent, adhesive, is used for setting stucco and will not work properly with uneven, dirty or broken surfaces. You can fill cracks and patch damaged areas using the stucco mix similar to applying plaster using a trowel. Some damaged areas of the old stucco surface may have the metal mesh showing or missing, which will also need to be repaired.

    Reapplying Stucco

    • When reapplying stucco over an older stucco finish you will need to work with a damp surface. You can purchase premixed stucco from home improvement stores. Generally about two coats of the new stucco will serve to update the stucco finish on the surface.
