Definition: The word ahnkar is usually interpreted to mean pride. The literal meaning of ahnkar is arrogance, conceit, haughtiness, or excessive pride. Ahnkar can manifest as jealously and spite and is considered in Sikhism, to be one of the five evils often referred to as the five thieves, or the self indulgent voices of ego, which plunder the soul and plunge it into egotistic existence.
