    Basic Requirements

    • Most Christian schools require the bus driver to have completed high school or a GED equivalent to be considered for work. Most Christian schools require a drug and alcohol test, a physical exam and a criminal background check. These are standard procedures to avoid any future issues that may arise. Lastly, the applicant must have a clean driving record and demonstrate initiative in continuing to improve their driving skills.

    Federal Requirements

    • Federal law requires that every Christian school bus driver have a commercial driver's license, also referred to as a CDL. A CDL can be acquired through the local driving authority. The CDL process includes written exams, driving tests and attending a specified class on driving safety. Many states also require specific endorsements for each bus driver. Check with your local authority for the details.

    Other Training

    • Many states require the Christian school bus driver to attend a 1 to 4 week class that focuses on specific bus training and driving. The course may include, but is not limited to: local laws, regulations, policies enforced by various schools, first aid, how to handle special needs, needy students and what to do in an emergency. The class is intended to prepare the driver for circumstances that come along with being a driver, but have nothing to do with driving the actual bus.

    Character

    • One aspect of a Christian school bus driver that is distinctively different than a secular school bus driver is the level of character and faith expected. The Christian school is placing its students in the hands of the driver so it is anticipated that the bus driver will enforce the lessons and moral values expressed by the school. The bus driver may be asked to share his or her testimony in the initial interview to evaluate their level of spiritual conviction.

    Personality

    • The personality of a Christian school bus driver should be fun-loving and yet authoritative. The driver needs to be easy to relate to and out-going, but not afraid to establish order and structure on his or her bus. Because they should be willing to go the extra mile for the safety and comfort of the students, they should possess the gift of hospitality and leadership.
