Garage Door Opener Cable Installation
- 1). Purchase a garage door cable kit at a home improvement store or through a garage door supplier.
- 2). Fully open the garage door. Block the garage door open with a piece of wood to ensure no one closes the door during the cable installation process. If a garage door opener is installed, unplug the opener or disengage the chain so it cannot be closed. Try closing the garage door to ensure the safety device in place is adequate.
- 3). Place the loop end of the cable on the screw in the bottom left-hand panel of the garage door. Place the set pin through the hole on the screw to hold the cable in place.
- 4). Place a ladder under the left-hand drum.
- 5). Insert the left-hand drum tight against the bearing. Tighten down the setscrews to hold it in place.
- 6). Draw the cable up to the left-hand drum. Ensure the cable has a straight run and there are no kinks in the cable.
- 7). Place the cable into the slot on the drum. Turn the drum toward you, pulling the drum down. Ensure the cable is turning into the grooves on the drum. Continue turning the drum until the cable is tight enough to strum.
- 8). Place a vise grip on the drum, wedging it between the wall or ceiling to hold the drum in place.
- 9). Repeat the process with the right-hand drum. Do not tighten the set screws on the right-hand drum until after the cable is tight enough to strum.

Ensure both cables have the same amount of tension. Adjust tension on the right-hand drum if necessary by turning the drum in the opposite direction until the tension on both cables is the same.
