Assessment of Paralympics 2012
The concluding statistics of the London Paralympics will certainly be a milestone in achievement not only for the Participating Paralympians but importantly for in the world wide perception of Athletes with Disabilities.
The attendance figures published by the London 2012 organizers Locog show that 2.
7million spectators paid for tickets to attend the Paralympic Games over the 11 day period and that UK free to air exclusive rights TV Channel 4 had at peak 6million UK viewers.
The person who has been head of the International Paralympics Committee the IPC since 1991 is Sir Phillip Craven, an ex-paralympian himself having represented Great Britain from 1972-1988 as a member of the wheelchair basketball squad He believes the legacy created by the Paralympics has gathered momentum after each successive games as it progressively becomes deeper and more far reaching than people realize.
Sir Phillip believes that world wide "Other things will shift" such as accessibility employment transport and even government as a result.
The IPC have a mission and that is to expose anyone who is ignorant to the exploits of Paralympians either on TV or live in the Stadiums to the message "These people are no different to us.
" The success of this mission is borne out in no uncertain terms by a survey by British Media reported today that has shown that 81% of those interviewed stated that the Athletic Achievements of the Paralympians had a positive impact upon their perception of Disability and that there is a need for fairer representation.
It is vitally important now to capitalize upon the Recognition of People with Disabilities that the Paralympics has created.
It will enable Paralympic athletes to achieve sporting excellence and to inspire a new generation of athletes by the speed of wheelchair basketball, the impacts in the rugby, the amazing standards in the swimming pool, the athletic field and track events, and many more ever increasing competitions.
The Right to maintain or preferably improve disability funding allocations by Governments has I believe been admirably earned for every person by the absolutely amazing achievements of all present and past Paralympic athletes, and should represent a further major step forward in world wide recognition.
