Social anxiety can perhaps be best compared to how a child acts in her adolescence years around strangers.
She acts nervous, wonders who are these people, and at that stage in her life, the only trustworthy social contacts she knows of is her family.
The child would be shy and uneasy around new people.
Shyness and uneasiness are exactly the main symptoms of social anxiety.
However, as we get older and move onto other endeavors in life, we grow out of it and become a part of the system.
For some reason, some of us grow up still exhibiting these symptoms of severe social anxiety into our adult years.
What can you really do when it comes to overcoming social anxiety? Well, overcoming social anxiety, boosting and improving your self confidence would seem to be the answers, right? It is easier said than done.
Here's what you can do when trying to overcome social anxiety:
  • First of all, don't go crazy and try too hard.
    Many of us are shy when it comes to mingling with people at work, school, parties, or just anywhere.
    Don't make it a matter of life and death.
    Just go up to your co-workers, fellow classmates, neighbors -- and say "hello".
  • You will be surprised how many great relationships start with a simple "hello".
    Remember, people don't know that you are trying to overcome social anxiety.
    They're seeing you as just a nice person who said hi to them and wants to be friends.
    This alone can get you great response.
  • When you go out shopping at regular places, such as your local grocery store, greet the workers there with a smile and shake their hands.
    They are probably not used to customers being so nice to them and will definitely welcome you with open arms into their territory.
    You may even find some good friends this way.
  • Become part of a public speaking club designed specifically for shy people, these can be found almost in any neighborhood and city.
    Speak in front of them and just forget about what's around you and let your words flow with confidence.
  • Use the internet to your advantage.
    The internet has a plethora of groups and forums where you can easily find people with common interests, even locals from your own area, and network with them.
When working towards overcoming social anxiety, find a mentor.
Someone confident and assertive who you admire, and try to imitate them.
This doesn't have to be in person, but can be done over the internet as well.
