What Are Low Blows?
- The literal definition of a low blow, an attack against the crotch, is most often found in the field of fighting. Although such a move is illegal in many professional combat sports, it might be used in a brawl, while the term is found in the world of sports-entertainment --- scripted --- wrestling. Performers in promotions such as the WWE use the low blow to not only injure opponents and gain an advantage in a match, but also to draw the ire of a live crowd, who typically view such dirty techniques as villainous and will often jeer at performers who use them. Note that in this latter sense, the low blow does not actually connect with severe force, since this kind of wrestling is scripted in nature and performers do not intend to hurt each other.
- The low blow is a move found in some video games, often those in the fighting or action genre. However, the role-playing game "World of Warcraft" contains a spell called Low Blow, which takes the form of a cheap shot that deals a small amount of damage to an enemy, as well as temporarily reducing that individual's accuracy in combat.
- A low blow is often used as a metaphor in arguments between individuals or organizations. In this sense, a low blow is a statement which brings an issue into the argument which others view as unnecessary or inappropriate. For example, an individual involved in a feud with another might publicly talk about the latter's person's estranged sibling, who had remained a secret for years, to embarrass his rival. Others would consider bringing family into an unrelated argument a low blow. In a similar fashion, the term low blow can refer to an individual saying something crude or else focusing on a subject sensitive to a rival during a verbal argument.
- On a larger scale, a low blow is a term sometimes used by individuals reporting political events, where the word typically refers to the mentioning of inappropriate content by a side in a political argument. Politicians and their supporters might go for the proverbial low blow for leverage against opponents, hoping that the information they disclose will embarrass their rival.
